The level of the sea is rising, rains are stronger and more icewater is flowing down from the Alps. The importance of good flood risk management is becoming more and more important. In the years to come, we will be faced with so much water that technical measures alone, such as raising dikes, will no longer be enough to prevent flooding and minimise damage.

On the 28th of February 2010 at 2 a.m. the storm Xynthia hit the French Atlantic coast. The storm surge combined with the high tide and large waves caused flood defences to fail along the coastline from the Gironde (Bordeaux) to the Loire Estuary.
